My Story

I’ve always been passionate about clear, effective writing. My favourite part of writing was always the revision process — whether it was my own writing or other people’s work. 

Identifying when material just wasn’t working and diagnosing the problem was practically an obsession. I was known for it. Classmates, followed by colleagues at work, would all come to me with the same question: “Can you read my…?” 
 

When they needed someone to scrutinize their writing and get to the heart of what it needed to be more effective, they would know exactly where to turn.
 

I’d start every edit with the same question: “what are you trying to get across with this?” Equipped with that information, I would work backwards — leaving comments to explain my edits and questions for their clarification long before I’d ever heard the term “query.”
 

It turned out that the types of questions I was asking — were the ideas coming across clearly? Did the order of the writing make sense? What would make it stronger? — were all the questions an editor would ask. 
 

I realized that something I had enjoyed doing my whole life could be a career. After enrolling in and completing George Brown College’s Editorial Skills Certificate program, I started City Key Editing — a place where I could do what I loved most: help others make the most out of their writing.
 

Since then, I’ve helped clients including schools, nonprofits, wellness centres, pediatric clinics, magazines all improve their communications. I've edited annual reports, white papers, website copy, and magazine articles.
